screen size is good enough to not feel constricted (actual size inside the border). The overall device size is also good – light enough to hold in the hand, small enough to slip against a bigger laptop when travelling. The keyboard detaches quickly or folds behind the screen without a second thought, and the main chassis feels solid but not unwieldy. Recently I’ve even travelled with just this as my main device, shaving my luggage down substantially. It sits on my lap or the tray on a flight or a train without having to do a velociraptor/t-rex impression with my arms.

It comfortably plays HD out to a 48 inch TV, both desktop and movies at a respectable framerate. I don’t know what it was precisely but there was no visible flicker, so probably around 20-25FPS. I managed to get through a series of Bones using this puppy

Battery life is comfortably a working day between uses and it recharges through a USB micro-b port. I have managed to last 4 days with just a portable power-pack, and worked continuously on 8 hours flights without having to micro-manage screen brightness, background tasks etc to conserve battery life.

No CPU fan – this is a huge bug bear for me on my other machine, which, even when apparently not busy, will frequently decide to whip up a continuous hurricane.

Speed is good enough, dare I say it, actually good: considering this has only got an atom processor, with 128GB of storage and 4GB of ram its good enough to work with mail, office documents and creating powerpoints and music through Spotify/iTunes (there’s no juttering or slowing of music either) – it all works nicely and I frequently have Outlook, PowerPoint, Visual Studio, iTunes, and 5 or more IE and Chrome browser tabs open. More recently, with the death of my main machine (ironically at the end of its warranty and noisy CPU fan) I’ve been using this as my main machine. Whilst a lot of what I do is cloud based, I still have to work offline, so that means running Visual Studio 2015 to develop Data Lake jobs, Anaconda with Jupyter notebooks, Node.js and Visual Studio tools for R . OK – it takes a minute or two to open Visual Studio and it’s not going to be doing any large crunching, but it did comfortably process a 400MB zip file with 4GB of Data in a Data Lakes Analytic Query and Custom Extractor in about 4 minutes. I’ve even managed to boot Unity up and tested one of the samples. Let’s be clear here, this isn’t going to pop my eyebrows off with its speed, but it did have a go and was actually usable.

Inking/writing: I’m a huge fan of inking, and whilst its good on windows 10, its great on the anniversary update, which includes Windows Ink Space. Whilst I’m still more of a OneNote chap, I can see the attraction of the sticky note functionality with InkSpace.

Micro drive – I installed an additional 64GB MicroSD card specifically for my one drive photos and music, which leaves the main storage free for page swapping/ downloads etc.

I have used this to encode mp3 and mp4, I’ll generally make sure itâs the only task the machine is doing. This has been a life saver if I’m travelling.

Fully functional keyboard and tracker pad, and ability to switch to onscreen if required.

There’s usually a second or so between tapping the power button and the screen lighting up. This meant I couldn’t tell if the thing was asleep, powered down or simply refusing to boot. This has led to a couple of occasions in the last year of clown like cycles of me pressing the power button, looking confused, pressing it again, pressing and holding it. All the time the surface is trying to respond to the last press, so was going up, coming down. This took me a while to work out, There’s no fix – just patience, tap the power button, give it 30 seconds, it will come up.

There have been 2 or 3 instances where it simply wouldn’t boot – however, the fix was again, really straight forwards – remove the keyboard, any USB device and the power cable – press and hold the power button. It will boot.
